About Us

Celebrity SupportersKeeping Babies Safe www.keepingbabiessafe.org is a non-profit, 501 (c)(3) organization.  Our mission is to educate and inform parents on how to keep babies safe from preventable injuries associated with unsafe cribs, dangerous infant products and unsafe sleep environments.

Keeping Babies Safe is a reliable, free, information resource for parents that provides all the necessary crib safety and sleep environment information, product recall information and safety tips so parents can be vigilant about keeping their babies safe.

Joyce Davis, President of Keeping Babies Safe, lost her son due to adding a supplemental mattress that was advertised as suitable for their popular brand of portable crib.  Joyce founded Keeping Babies Safe to educate parents about crib and sleep safety and to advocate for more stringent consumer safety regulations laws be in place in evaluating products.  “These dangers are completely preventable,” says Joyce.  “We supply reliable information to parents so they can be better informed to protect their babies.  Cribs are the most important product in your home for your baby. It’s the only place where your child is left unattended.  Consumers must be educated in safety awareness.  Dangers can exist even in un-recalled, new cribs.  In fact,  more fatalities have occurred in un-recalled cribs than  recalled ones.”

KBS works directly with the Consumer Product Safety Commission and co-launched a safe sleeping poster campaign last Spring.  Now, more than ever parents need to know where they can go for safe, reliable information particularly with over 7 million cribs having been recalled in the past two years.

In addition to providing education and safety guidelines to parents, Keeping Babies Safe has mounted Project Safe Crib, a non-profit program designed to educate social workers and other health care personnel on safe crib practices as well as helping parents from economically challenged environments obtain safe cribs through health and human service organizations nationwide. Once personnel have been trained, Project Safe Crib purchases safe cribs at an industry discount and provides them to hospitals, clinics and other health and human service organizations for distribution to the public.

Since 2007, Project Safe Crib has donated more than 2000 cribs to families nationwide. We invite you to join us in this noble venture.  Please consider donating to Keeping Babies Safe. With every $100 donation, Keeping Babies Safe is able to purchase a new crib for those in need through our program Project Safe Crib.  We can assure you that 100% of your donation will go to saving the lives of babies.

Facts:

  • Cribs continue to be the leading cause of death and injury among all nursery products.
  • Over the past two years, more than 7 million cribs were recalled for safety reasons.
  • More infant fatalities occur in non-recalled cribs than in recalled cribs.
  • Between 2004-2006, 93 children died because of unsafe cribs.  The majority was attributed to the presence of supplemental bedding in the crib.  Other hazards such as incomplete assembly; missing, broken, or non-functioning components; or ineffective repairs made to the crib.  Some of these incidents occurred on older, re-assembled, recalled, or second hand cribs.  Presence of hazardous surroundings in and around the crib was the next most common cause of crib fatalities.
  • In 2008, 11,500 infants were injured in cribs and 1,400 injured in play yards and play pens.
